Chondrocytes were grown to 80% confluence and transduced with adenoviral vector carrying the human inducible nitric oxide synthase gene as described in Materials and methods. Variable concentrations of N-monomethyl-L-arginine were added to modulate NO synthesis, the cells stimulated with 10% fetal calf serum (FCS) or 50 ng/ml insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and proliferation evaluated after 24 hours.
