Increased serum cholesterol levels do not affect cartilage damage during experimental OA. Cartilage damage was scored at the medial and lateral side of the tibial plateau and femoral condyles (A). No significant differences were found between the different groups. B shows representative pictures (stained with safranin O - fast green) of the medial femoral condyle and tibial plateau of four OA joints. Two representative pictures of naïve joints show that the observed cartilage damage was due to collagenase injection rather than age or genomic and environmental factors. ns = not significant. n = 10 mice per group.
