In cultured rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts (RA-SF) onlyabout 40% expressed PTEN (A) whereas matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2was expressed constitutively by almost every cell (B). PTEN expression(C) was negligible in RA-SF aggressively invading the co-implantedcartilage in the renal capsule of severe combined immunodeficiency mice.However, abundant expression of MMP-2 messenger RNA was found (D).
