Histological analysis of inflamed joints in mice with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). a The severity of arthritis was evaluated histologically in knee and ankle joint specimens obtained from control CIA mice (untreated) and mice treated with different dosages of soluble sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-type lectin (sSiglec)-9. Each section was stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE; upper row) or Safranin O (lower row). Serial sagittal sections (4.5 μm) were examined, and the maximally affected section was evaluated and scored. Typically, the midline of the medial condyle was examined.
