The immunodominant CII 256-270 peptide. CII is variably post-translationally modified in the chondrocyte by hydroxylation followed by galactosylation or glucogalactosylation of hydroxylysines. The peptide is depicted with the O-linked β -galactose at position 264 (hydroxylysine). The MMC mice have the CII point mutation to express glutamic acid at position 266 (as in human and rat CII), whereas mouse CII expresses aspartic acid at this position.
