mRNA expression of inflammatory mediators and cytokines related to bone destruction. (a) Expression of mRNA for cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the hind paws was measured by quantitative real-time PCR and corrected by mRNA expression for Ī²-actin in each sample (see Materials and methods). (b) Expression of mRNA for IL-11 and IL-17 in the hind paws was measured by quantitative real-time PCR and corrected by mRNA expression for Ī²-actin in each sample (see Materials and methods). On day 10 of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) treatment, differences between the arthritic group and the CIA group treated with VIP were statistically significant (*p < 0.05, **p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001). Results are the mean Ā± SEM of two separate experiments with 10 animals per group.
