Generation of neoepitopes by MMPs*. Type I and type III collagen α1 strands are cleaved between amino acid 775 and 776 by MMPs-1, 8, 13, 14, or MT3-MMP [13]. Type I collagen fragments can be cleaved by MMP-2, 9, or 13 between amino acids 764 and 765, forming the neoepitope C1M [14]. The type III collagen fragment can be cleaved by MMP-9 or 12 between amino acids 609 and 610 to form C3M [15, 16]. CRP can be cleaved by MMP-1 or 8 between amino acid 24 and 25 to form CRPM [17].
