From: A cysteine proteinase inhibitor ALLN alleviates bleomycin-induced skin and lung fibrosis

Fig. 5

Intraperitoneal ALLN injection ameliorates bleomycin-induced skin fibrosis in mice. A The antifibrotic effects of ALLN were analyzed in the back skin of mice receiving daily subcutaneous injections of bleomycin concurrent with a peritoneal injection of ALLN or PBS (3 times per week) for 4 weeks. Representative images of H&E stained (upper columns) and Masson’s trichrome stained tissue (lower columns) are shown. Double-headed arrows indicate the measured length of dermal thickness. Scale bar, 100 μm. B Skin fibrosis in bleomycin-injected mice with or without ALLN was compared by determining dermal thickness and ratio of the Masson’s trichrome-stained area; n = 5 for each group. Total collagen content in the skin paraffin sections was evaluated by the Sirius Red/Fast Green Collagen Assay; n = 3–4 for each group. Values represent mean ± SEM; *, p ≤ 0.05
